Dev argues Codex subscriptions may be subsidized: here's how to compute the breakeven
JoshPurtell · x · 2026-10-06
Developer Josh Purtell outlines a framework for assessing whether AI coding subscriptions like Codex are priced below cost: estimate a breakeven point from the cost profiles of the subscription and API inference products, then derive a multiplier to gauge the subsidy level.
He also cautions that API and subscription offerings aren't apples-to-apples — the API is tuned for enterprise production deployments with different performance and reliability profiles. The upshot: aggressive coding-subscription pricing may be cross-subsidized by enterprise API revenue, raising sustainability questions.
