PewDiePie banned twice by OpenAI while fine-tuning local model, goes fully open-source
rodrigodevbits · reddit · 2026-10-06
PewDiePie was building a local AI model called Ajax on his own machine and used OpenAI's API to generate his training dataset. OpenAI flagged the account for violating its terms against training other models with its outputs and banned him. After successfully appealing and getting unbanned, he immediately pulled data from the API again — and got banned a second time.
Rather than giving up, he switched to open-source tools to strip the model's built-in refusals, cleaned out the preachy filler, and started building a fully local 9B agent. The takeaway: OpenAI scraped the entire public internet for free to train its own models, yet treats a local fine-tune as an emergency ban — handing open-source models a massive free advertisement to millions.
