Real2sim's last mile for robotics: verification pipeline for physics and affordance
chris_j_paxton · x · 2026-10-06
Responding to the buzz around Astra-style real2sim, researchers argue "looking right" is still far from being usable for robot eval/training, and the last mile is all about verification:
- Checks: geometry/topology, material and appearance, articulation and collision, physics and stability
- The SOTA recipe uses an agent with the action space of a "full-stack simulation engineer", jointly handling geometry, materials, colliders, articulation, and physics
- Affordance: model object details that convey functionality
- Physics calibration: automatically calibrate simulation dynamics against real-world trajectories to match task-specific dynamics
Core claim: sim environments are only useful if they provide meaningful policy-level signals.
