Timothy Gowers: we need pre-reading signals to triage AI-generated scientific papers
littmath · x · 2026-10-06
Fields Medalist Timothy Gowers discusses the refereeing problem when AI produces scientific papers at scale: humans can't referee them all, so we need a signal (e.g. time spent by the author) indicating what's worth reading before reading. He notes other signals may exist but demanding some such signal seems clearly reasonable.
