OpenAI rolls out textGrain text watermarking in the EU to comply with the AI Act, will open-source it
MartinSignoux · x · 2026-10-06
OpenAI is expanding content provenance to text with textGrain, a watermarking scheme introduced in response to EU AI Act requirements — while acknowledging the significant limitations of current text watermarking.
Key points:
- Eligible text from ChatGPT and Codex in the EU will be watermarked over the coming weeks;
- API customers worldwide can enable text watermarking for select models today;
- Detector access will open to researchers, and textGrain will be open-sourced.
