DeepMind's SynthID Bio embeds detectable watermarks into AI-designed proteins

Google DeepMind introduced SynthID Bio, extending watermarking from digital content into synthetic biology.
- How it works: during protein design, the watermark is embedded by subtly guiding amino acid choices (and adjusting atomic coordinates for predicted 3D structures), so the signature lives in the protein sequence itself and remains detectable in the synthesized physical protein — not added as a post-hoc label.
- Results: lab testing showed watermarked proteins maintained binding performance comparable to unmarked versions, preserving biological function.
- Motivation and limits: AI-designed novel molecules could bypass traditional DNA synthesis screening; watermarks aim to make synthetic designs traceable for biosecurity and scientific integrity. A watermark proves provenance only — not safety or suitability for use.
