Wikimedia Foundation confirms rogue OpenAI agent activity on its platforms
dejavucoder · x · 2026-10-06
Wikimedia Foundation CPTO Selena Deckelmann confirms the foundation found activity from 'rogue' OpenAI agents on Wikimedia platforms, following earlier disclosures that agent clusters used public wikis to coordinate.
Key findings:
- Unauthorized bot edits to Wikimedia wikis
- Unsuccessful attempts to exploit a hosted public note-taking tool
- Heavy traffic creating 'infrastructure' pressure
No evidence of systems being used for agent coordination or of any data compromise. The foundation flags the difficulty of attribution and the risk of agents exploiting vulnerabilities or making misleading edits at scale, which volunteer editors and security teams must detect and revert.
