A Princeton team trained a 4B-parameter chess language model that plays at typical grandmaster level and explains its moves in natural language. The work required architectural and algorithmic innovation — a natural-language analogue of the AlphaZero algorithm — and the authors say it generalizes to other domains, presented around COLM.
