E2B Engineer Teaches AI Agent Sandbox Ops: From Runaway Processes to Scaling to Thousands
AI Engineer · youtube · 2026-10-06
At the AI Engineer conference, Matt Brockman of E2B ran a capture-the-flag workshop on real-world sandbox operations for AI agents.
Single-sandbox debugging
- Hands-on exercises with deliberately broken environments: finding a runaway process eating 99.7% CPU, memory pressure, a file filling the disk, and cleaning up background processes — each isolated and resettable.
Templates & snapshots
- E2B templates preserve a running system's memory and filesystem so work resumes where it stopped; the tradeoff is forgotten processes come back too.
Scaling to hundreds/thousands
- Shorten idle timeouts to reclaim unused capacity; replace round-robin with user-to-sandbox-ID mapping so each person returns to the same workspace; separate template-readable files from runtime write locations.
Q&A covered volumes, storage growth, distributed workloads, orchestration, and network restrictions. The recurring task: tracking what runs where, what it can access, and when to clean up.
