OpenAI to watermark ChatGPT text outputs to comply with EU AI Act

OpenAI is expanding its content provenance approach to text in response to EU regulatory requirements:
- Eligible text from ChatGPT and Codex will start being watermarked in the EU over the coming weeks to comply with the EU AI Act
- API customers can enable text watermarking for select models worldwide today
- This builds on existing tools that verify whether images or audio were generated by OpenAI models
- The company acknowledges significant limitations of current text watermarking technology
