Cat-Video Analogy: The Model Doesn't Become the Cat or the Author
gerardsans · x · 2026-10-06
Gerardsans extends his "AI has no self" argument with a generated-cat-video analogy:
- Nobody treats a cat video made with the same technology as proof the system became the cat — the pixels merely correlate with cats in training data; the trait stays in the output, never enters the weights, and there is no embodied experience, just a sample.
- Text works the same way: a sentence about pain is a correlation over text, as a cat frame is a correlation over pixels; the trait stays in the output and does not move into the model.
- A chatbot is a design choice — first person, chat format, post-training — not an emergent soul. Same sampler, different data, different appearance, different mask.
So Shakespeare-style text or an Iron Man likeness is unsurprising: the system did not become the author or the character.
