AI job replacement happens at the company level, not the job level
dbasch · x · 2026-10-06
The author argues AI-driven job replacement isn't about roles within companies but entire corporations. Established companies can't adopt AI well — slow, risk-averse, unable to fire or eliminate departments. Startups have nothing to lose, so they build the same functionality without hiring the people once required. A cheaper, more efficient startup appears out of nowhere, incumbents don't know what to do, and start dying. Crucially, jobs lost when incumbents shut down won't be recreated at the startup that killed them.
