Threads' hold-to-cut-out gesture is powered by Meta's SAM segmentation model

Threads is rolling out a small gesture: hold down on any subject in an image and SAM (Segment Anything Model) segments it so you can attach the cut-out to your reply.
A Meta AI team member notes SAM now powers so many surfaces across Meta products that even the SAM team doesn't always know about them all — a showcase of how widely the segmentation model has been reused in production.
