OpenAI rolls out textGrain text watermarking for EU AI Act, going open source
btibor91 · x · 2026-10-05
OpenAI is rolling out text watermarking to comply with the EU AI Act:
- Opt-in for global API customers on select models starting today; ChatGPT and Codex text in the EU gets an invisible watermark over the coming weeks.
- The technique, textGrain, embeds an invisible statistical signal in the model's word choices, matched or beat Google's SynthID in OpenAI's tests with no meaningful quality hit.
- textGrain will be open sourced.
