a16z releases the seventh edition of its Top 100 Consumer AI Apps, adding for the first time a ranking of observed US consumer card spending via YipitData.
- Key takeaway: consumer AI usage is wide but not deep. Nearly half of US consumers report using AI, but only 25% engage daily; as of August, just 4.5% had an active paid personal subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude (up from 2.1% a year earlier).
- Spending follows a power law: only 13% of payers buy a second AI tool; the top 1% of spenders account for 19.5% of all observed consumer AI spend, more than the bottom 50% combined (16.6%). The top 1% spend an average of $903/month, up 80% in 18 months, versus $25/month for the median payer.
- Heavy spenders look like prosumers, over-indexing on automation and building tools (n8n, fal, Manus, Nous Research) and creative tools (Higgsfield, Figma, HeyGen).
- Competitive landscape: ChatGPT remains the leader with roughly 2x Gemini's web visits and 6x Claude's, and 2.5x/14x mobile MAU leads; it has 3x more US paid subscribers than Claude or Gemini. Claude has emerged as clear #3 and caught up to Gemini in US consumer subscribers.
- Anthropic won't run ads in Claude and monetizes via subscription; its $100/month Max plan accounts for 7.3% of its consumer payers, versus 1.3% for Google and 1.1% for ChatGPT.
- The three labs shipped 127 launches in six months: Anthropic focused on prosumers, Google on creative models, OpenAI on both consumer and enterprise.
- The report argues consumer AI may need a new business model — or an old one like ads — since nearly all revenue comes from direct subscriptions or usage charges.
