Aleph Alpha open-sources Kolibri: 78B params, 3.46B active, 1M context — as Mistral cedes the sovereign AI crown
irombie · x · 2026-10-05
Aleph Alpha has released Kolibri, a European-built open model with 78B parameters (3.46B active), up to 1M tokens of context, and weights under Apache 2.0.
The poster calls it a generational fumble by Mistral: the French startup, once Europe's sovereign AI champion, pivoted away from building models toward applications and infrastructure just as open-source models became good and cheap enough to be viable. Aleph Alpha, which raised only 15% of Mistral's funding, swooped in with a cheap, high-performing open-source alternative.
