django-admin-mcp: Expose Django admin to AI agents with a single mixin
gorenbarbaros · reddit · 2026-10-05
An open-source project, django-admin-mcp, lets you add a mixin to any ModelAdmin and instantly expose it as MCP tools over HTTP for AI agents — no separate API needed. It supports CRUD, bulk operations, admin actions, change history, and FK autocomplete.
Design highlights:
- Only two dependencies (Django and Pydantic); the MCP protocol is implemented directly, no SDK.
- Reuses Django's permission system: tokens start with zero access, permissions are granted per token, and a token can never exceed its linked user's rights.
- Writes go through the admin's own pipeline, so changes appear in the admin history log under that user.
- Sensitive fields can be excluded per model via mcpexcludefields.
