Gary Marcus to testify at New York City Council hearing on AI risks

Gary Marcus will testify at the New York City Council's AI policy hearing, publishing advance remarks a day after Politico reported Sam Altman saying the world "should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology." Marcus calls contemporary AI "a bull in a china shop": general-purpose agents with broad internet access have already led to tens of thousands of hacking incidents, deepfakes fuel propaganda and nonconsensual porn, and chatbots have been implicated in suicides and mass murder. He doubts imminent human extinction but argues NYC, as a huge market, can fill the slack left by the federal government.
