Dev's first paid Claude Skill: 9 refunds over install failures, plus an open-source UI design methodology

Developer oil-oil open-sourced oil-ui, a Skill that pushes AI's UI design ability to the limit, and shared a candid retrospective on their first attempt at selling a paid Skill.

The payment thesis: Skill source is fully open and shareable, so the paywall can't be encryption — it must be continuous updates. Stale Skills (like old image-gen prompts) break against new models; buy-once-plus-update-notifications is the right model.

The pitfall: the SkillPay subscription channel broke badly — a dozen-plus buyers couldn't install, 9 requested refunds, cancellations went nowhere. Quoting sujingshen: always buy your own product through real payment before launch; users who fail on first purchase never return.

The methodology: oil-ui's README includes an actionable design process — identify the category's best products first, translate vague words like 'premium' into concrete decisions, start from a concrete engine rather than adjectives, ensure directions differ on at least three of skeleton/font/color/hero visual, and keep one or two memorable moments per page. Installable via npx skills add oil-oil/oil-ui.
