Runway, the AI video company, has launched Praxis-1, a foundation model for robot control trained almost entirely on video.
- The bet: Robot training data is the biggest bottleneck in physical AI, yet more human-activity video is uploaded daily than all robot labs on Earth have collected combined.
- Deployment: Praxis-1 adapts to robot arms and humanoids with light fine-tuning; three robotics companies are already testing it on their own hardware, and it ships with open weights.
- Limitations: Video shows what should happen, not force, slip, or contact — those still require real hardware. Video won't replace robot data, but it makes every hour of real robot data worth dramatically more.
