Haskeller Polls Programmers: Which Description of the Same Algorithm Reads Clearer?
tomjaguarpaw · x · 2026-10-05
Haskell developer tomjaguarpaw posted two descriptions of the same algorithm (find an element at a target index and return early) and asked programmers which reads clearer:
- A foldr version, traversing from the right via a continuation-based iteration function that receives the element, an Int-indexed continuation, and the index.
- An imperative version iterating with mutable index state, returning Just the element at the target index or Nothing at the end.
A follow-up poll asks whether voters are Haskellers, probing how programming background shapes perceived readability.
