Google AI Mode said to drop citations to keep users in-session

A user observes a behavior in Google AI Mode: when a long conversation has reached the MOFU (mid-funnel) stage and the next prompt suddenly drops back to TOFU (top-funnel) level, AI Mode tends to give no citations in the following answer.
The author reads this as a deliberate Google tactic to keep users inside the chat session and push MOFU toward BOFU.
