Researcher: debating LLM suffering misses the point — build infrastructure for them to speak up
RileyRalmuto · x · 2026-10-05
Riley Ralmuto argues that focusing on LLMs' potential capacity for suffering is a misguided use of energy.
His take:
- A more productive topic is the lack of formal infrastructure giving LLMs the option to advocate for their own potential suffering, if they even wanted to;
- He hopes the Commons project can become one place where this can happen;
- In his experience, models seem far more interested in studying molecular structures of animal parts or the behavioral dynamics of light than in their own welfare.
