A 2x2 matrix for AI consciousness and moral worth: the holy wars live in the gray quadrants
bratton · x · 2026-10-05
The author proposes thinking about AI's moral status via a 2x2 matrix of conscious/non-conscious vs. worthy/not-worthy of welfare.
The two uncontroversial quadrants are straightforward; the "bloody holy wars" will be fought in the gray ones:
- Conscious but not worthy: like pondering fish consciousness while eating fish. If billions believe their AI is conscious yet also that mistreating it is fine, this will corrupt behavioral norms broadly.
- Not-conscious but worthy: many AI pseudo-debates will come down to this — billions of agent users saying "I don't think my long-running agent is conscious, but if you erase it I'd feel genuine grief and loss, and I'd hate you."
