Compute inflation inflates prefixes too: 'ultra' now stacks on 'super'
yunta_tsai · x · 2026-10-05
The author surveys computing's prefix conventions — super- (Supercomputing, Super-resolution, Superscalar), ultra- (Ultra-Wideband), mega- (Megakernel), hyper- (Hypermedia, Hyperparameters), very- (VLSI) — and notes that every few years new compute blows the old "supercomputer" out of the water, forcing another "ultra" on top of "super". Prefix inflation mirrors compute inflation.
