Liv Gorton on the SFF Incident: Criticism, Employer Pressure, and Disassociation Aren't the Same
livgorton · x · 2026-10-05
Reflecting on the SFF incident, the author argues 'cancellation' conflates three distinct things: (1) people criticizing someone's speech, (2) pressuring employers/funders/platforms into punishment out of fear, and (3) independently choosing to disassociate.
She sees (1) as legitimate speech and (2) as bad. On the key question of a single powerful funder directing money by personal values (the 'Dustin' case), she tentatively views it as closer to (3)—people can largely direct their own resources by their values—while acknowledging it's unusual that so much funding flows through one person. She adds she isn't subtweeting any specific event, just reacting to recent online madness.
