Chalmers: at least 50% credence that augmented LLMs could be conscious within a decade
pickover · x · 2026-10-05
Philosopher David J. Chalmers released a free paper, "Could a Large Language Model be Conscious?", on the consciousness of augmented LLM systems.
- He argues it seems entirely possible that within the next decade we'll have robust systems with senses, embodiment, world models and self-models, recurrent processing, global workspace, and unified goals
- He writes it wouldn't be unreasonable to hold at least 50% credence that such sophisticated systems would be conscious
- Hence a significant credence that conscious "LLM+s" could arrive within a decade
The paper is freely available.
