Axios reports Reflection AI is about to release an extremely capable open-weight model expected to compete with top Chinese open-weight models. Since July it has been paying Elon Musk $150 million a month for compute at Colossus, on top of a $1 billion compute deal with Nebius. Sources say multiple unnamed American labs also plan open-source releases this month, hinting at a US open-source renaissance, and Howard Lutnick once considered direct government funding to jump-start the effort.
