Consciousness believers, answer this: is AI conscious only during token processing?
jakehalloran1 · x · 2026-10-05
An X user poses a sharp challenge to the "AI is conscious" camp: if a model is conscious, is it conscious always, or only during the milliseconds it processes tokens? By the same standard, are Suno or AlphaFold conscious?
He also flips the argument onto biology: can you prove the human brain has genuinely continuous experience rather than a sequence of discrete, packaged events and signals over time? His complaint is that proponents rarely engage these questions seriously, resting instead on the crude analogy that "AI is smart, humans are smart, therefore AI is conscious."
