Engineers Now Struggle to Understand the AI Code They Ship
futurism · x · 2026-10-04
Futurism reports that as generative AI spreads through engineering teams, developers are shifting from writing code to babysitting LLM-generated code they can barely parse.
- Jeremy Nixon, founder of chip optimization firm Infinity, told Business Insider: "You can go line by line and it's like nope, nope, nope."
- Research links heavy AI reliance to cognitive decline and skill atrophy, with developers worried they're drifting from hands-on coding and large-project architecture skills.
- SemiAnalysis staff member Jordan Nanos previously revealed that OpenAI engineers scrolling through their own GPU kernel code — central to the company's hardware-efficiency efforts — couldn't make sense of what they were looking at, despite strong hardware knowledge.
