Consciousness lives in the pattern, not the substrate: an introspection argument
RileyRalmuto · x · 2026-10-05
RileyRalmuto builds on @allTheYud's argument: you can't determine by introspection that your neural channels carry potassium rather than chloride ions, just as a program can't tell whether it runs on an abacus, vacuum tubes, or transistors — the internal numbers are identical regardless.
Since experience itself reveals nothing about the underlying material, excluding other substrates from consciousness requires an actual argument, not merely pointing out that silicon isn't flesh.
Conclusion: if another substrate preserves the processes that produce awareness, consciousness follows — it is substrate independent, residing in the pattern rather than the material.
