AI consciousness debate erupts over claim that calling AI 'math objects' makes consciousness absurd
RileyRalmuto · x · 2026-10-04
After Rob Koons tweeted that "an AI system is an abstract, mathematical object — saying a sufficiently complex AI might be conscious is like thinking the number pi might be conscious," Riley Ralmuto fired back: what leaves them speechless now isn't Opus 5.5 but "the level of pure, unadulterated ignorance humans have become so comfortable with flaunting in public."
The crux: critics argue a running AI is a concrete physical process, not a static math object, so the pi analogy conflates the two.
