AssemblyAI's homegrown agent Joey resolves 80% of support tickets at ~$700/month, up from 10%
AI Engineer · youtube · 2026-10-04
With 1,000 API signups a day and just one onboarding engineer, AssemblyAI replaced an off-the-shelf support bot that resolved only 10% of conversations with an in-house agent called Joey.
Key architecture details from Matt Lawler's talk at AI Engineer World's Fair:
- Built on the Claude Agent SDK
- Docs checked out as local markdown, with embeddings retrieval and agentic file search
- A single large CLAUDE.md for instructions
- Deployed on Railway, so fixes ship in 30 seconds
- Every human escalation becomes a roadmap item for the agent
Result: 80% end-to-end ticket resolution for about $700 a month. The talk also demos giving Joey real-time voice via AssemblyAI's Voice Agent API with a single websocket (STT + LLM + TTS), and argues FDEs should automate themselves out of a job and dogfood what their customers build.
