Researchers vent over grant bureaucracy: dozens of approvals, case for FRO model

iskander notes many inside the research bureaucracy want science to move faster and the system can be reformed, but it still does bone-headed things like blocking lab subscriptions.
A reply argues this is why the FRO model and other "light-admin academia" approaches are compelling: grants are treated like bank accounts by outsiders, but in reality spenders need approval from dozens of gatekeepers who resist anything new.
