Terminal era over? Codex desktop vs Claude Code CLI debate reignites over the right interface for coding agents
Liu_eroteme · x · 2026-10-04
@YuchenjUW argues the terminal era is over for coding agents: tabs are ephemeral but context is persistent, managing 30 terminal tabs is cognitive overhead, and IDEs like Cursor are unnecessary since "the new primitive is the agent, not the file" — with Codex desktop app the best so far. Replying, @Liueroteme pushes back: desktop apps are improving but he still prefers the CLI for intuition, scripting, piping small tasks, and working over ssh/in containers without handing keys to the model.
