Rural data centers are set for a big US federal tax break — but some hyperscalers aren't biting

WIRED reports that under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, projects sited on rural land across the US — most notably hyperscale data centers — become eligible for a set of corporate tax benefits starting January 1. Ways and Means chair Jason Smith said the rules may 'significantly lower barriers' for large-scale capital-intensive rural projects.
Experts warn the impact on rural communities could be mixed: Emily Kraschel of the Searchlight Institute notes capital investment is the only requirement, which doesn't guarantee jobs or local economic gains the way a traditional factory would. Some hyperscalers also don't seem eager to take the free cash.
