Gaussian ellipsoid fitting solved by three human papers in August, scooping AI

Mathematician Marc Lelarge notes that the first "open" problem on Gaussian ellipsoid fitting was actually solved by three papers in August — humans scooped AI on this one.
After reading the AI paper, he adds that its writing shows much higher care than recent AI-generated maths: the related prior works are cited and acknowledged (he later confirms even the first one is). The thread documents a race between human mathematicians and AI on the same theorem.
