"The terminal era is over": coding agents need a new interface, not CLI tabs
bcherny · x · 2026-10-04
YuchenjUW says they haven't touched Claude Code or Codex CLI in a while: the terminal era is over and it's the wrong interface for coding agents — tabs are ephemeral while context is persistent, and managing 30 tabs is pure cognitive overhead. They don't need an IDE like Cursor either, since they rarely navigate a whole codebase anymore. The new primitive is the agent, not the file (the Codex desktop app is among the best attempts so far).
bcherny replies asking whether they've tried Claude Code Desktop recently, saying it's quite good now and inviting feedback on what's missing.
