Who studies AI's impact when the labs write their own reports?
Tobias Rees notes that Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic all now run in-house "institutes" publishing papers about AI's future economic effects — and argues their reports are inevitably biased toward the stories they want to tell.
He calls for a new wave of independent research institutes studying AI's effects on markets and every aspect of life, naming Cosmos Institute and his own Swiss project Stella Matutina as rare examples.
