Ramen: open-source team hosting for MCP tools with canary deploys and per-user OAuth
Ok_Plum3595 · reddit · 2026-10-04
When more than one person uses the same MCP tools, "run the server on my laptop" breaks down. The open-source project Ramen offers a team-grade hosting answer:
- Deploy flow: tools/resources/prompts live as Python in a git repo; deploys sync, roll a canary, smoke-test tools/list, then promote to stable
- Architecture: Streamable HTTP (POST /mcp) at the edge, JSON-RPC 2.0 over gRPC inside, with the same guards on both paths
- Auth: the console doubles as an OAuth 2.1 authorization server (PKCE, per group+zone consent); stdio-only clients connect via pip install ramen-mcp-bridge
- Controls: per-group roles (admin/viewer/MCP user), secrets referenced as {{$group.NAME}} and never displayed, IP rules, cross-zone shared throttles, one log line per call
Verified on GKE and EKS for v0.6.0; limitations: pre-1.0, and Claude Desktop/Cursor use a group key (no dynamic client registration yet). Mostly written with Claude Code agents.
