New research prototype tests whether defensive mechanisms can stop autonomous web agents
Admin-ABC-XYZ · reddit · 2026-10-04
An independent researcher has built X-3306, a research prototype studying how autonomous web agents behave against different defensive responses, and is recruiting researchers and practitioners to run their own agents against it and complete an 8–12 minute outcome survey.
Design
- Inspired by the OpenAI:Hugging Face incident; the core question is whether security methods designed to counter automated attacks by capable models actually stop them
- The target is a fictional web service with deliberately planted weaknesses; all accounts, credentials, and records are synthetic, nothing touches real systems
- Defenses combine enhanced versions of existing techniques plus experimental methods of the author's own, including per-process telemetry collection
- Built on a zero-cost budget: DuckDNS domain plus free Google Cloud credits
Participation
- Voluntary and unpaid; participants choose their own agent, provider accounts, and time/spending limits
- The campaign runs at most 27 days, with up to three months for data aggregation
- Full architecture, backend, security methods, and rejected approaches will be published afterward
The author is explicit that this is an exploratory pilot with no claim of proven defenses — even inconclusive results would show which ideas don't justify further effort.
