US Data Center Construction Spending Surged 73% YoY to a Record $85B Annualized

US data center construction spending jumped 73% YoY in August to a record $85 billion annualized rate, the largest increase since April 2025. Since the start of 2021, spending has soared $76 billion, up 823%.
Meanwhile, general office construction spending fell 10% YoY to $46 billion — the fifth-lowest reading since December 2015, down $25 billion (35%) since early 2023. The gap between data center and office construction spending has widened to a record $39 billion, underscoring the accelerating AI investment surge.
