Sam Altman says his always-on Dot agent gave him back his mornings
every · x · 2026-10-04
In the debut episode of The Every Podcast, Dan Shipper interviews Sam Altman at OpenAI's DevDay, where the company shipped 22 products and features—more than twice last year's count. Altman teased: "Just wait for next year."
The centerpiece is his always-on agent Dot (temporarily named "Dotty"): early mornings used to be his peak-creativity deep work time, but running OpenAI meant daily firefighting. Dot now triages issues and alerts him only when urgent—"It sounds small, but it has been a significant improvement to my life."
Shipper's own Dot, Boo, proved useful too: while rescheduling a flight, it flagged an overlapping meeting it had read about in Slack—connecting details across apps a calendar check alone would miss. He notes the early product is still buggy. Altman also discusses his reliance on Astra's Ultrafast mode, how he builds features, and his belief that AI will spark a new Renaissance.
