Mat Dryhurst on AI-fish photos: the problem is the vanity economy, not AI
matdryhurst · x · 2026-10-04
An Atlantic column argues that anger over AI-generated fish photos flooding fishing communities reveals a deeper crisis: AI is making visual trust impossible. Artist-researcher Mat Dryhurst responds that the issue isn't AI itself but the reward system around superficial markers of accomplishment — people have long paid for photoshoots on private jets or Lamborghinis, and AI just lets anyone game that. He adds it may even be good to flood that vanity-driven field until it is barren.
