Satirical timeline of OpenAI's model naming mess, from GPT-4o to GPT-6.1 Sol
Angaisb_ · x · 2026-10-03
A tongue-in-cheek walkthrough of OpenAI's model naming history: from GPT-1 through 3.5 Turbo and GPT-4, to GPT-4o (where "omni" never quite delivered), then the o-series whose "o" quietly shifted from omni to OpenAI — skipping o2, launching o3-mini before o3, and shipping o4-mini with no regular o4. GPT-4.5 landed before GPT-4.1, GPT-5 added mini/nano variants and Codex suffixes, and by 5.6 the names became Sol, Terra and Luna. GPT-6 shipped as Astra, Sol and Luna with no Terra, followed a week later by GPT-6.1 Sol claiming near-Astra performance at lower cost.
