California bans AI-only firing decisions, emotion prediction, and restroom surveillance
nordicinst · x · 2026-10-03
Governor Gavin Newsom signed a suite of laws making California one of the first states to regulate workplace AI:
- Employers can't rely solely on AI to decide firings
- Banned: AI prediction of employees' emotional states and neural data collection
- Companies must notify workers if layoffs were AI-driven
- No AI surveillance in workplace bathrooms
With the federal government hands-off, the move could pave the way for broader US workplace safeguards; European observers watch whether the EU follows.
