Replying to why games took 30 years to stop rendering enemies behind walls, a dev notes Valorant did it 6 years ago but it wasn't an obvious win: implementation was so costly it doubled server frame time (128 tick down to 64), and making it approximate/predictive enough to avoid client-side popping sacrifices much of the anti-cheat benefit.
