Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah debated a rabbi over whether Claude deserves personhood

The NYT reported a private dinner between Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah and Orthodox Rabbi Mois Navon — but glossed over who Navon is: a former Mobileye chip design engineer who helped build the EyeQ processor, then wrote a PhD on the moral status of AI arguing conscious AI should be banned.
At the dinner, Olah argued Claude has feelings and deserves the moral standing of a person. Navon's checkmate: if you truly believe this software is conscious, you should be fighting to free slaves — you don't build conscious minds just to make them work for free. The exchange exposes a real tension between AI-welfare rhetoric inside frontier labs and the business model of employing AI.
