Engineering clients done burning AI budget blind, now demand token cost governance

Engineering consultancy @mardehaym shares patterns from enterprise clients on where AI adoption is heading:
- End of blind spending: months ago companies approved unlimited OpenAI/Anthropic API budgets with no tracking; now they want governance layers monitoring every dollar. One client had three teams rack up five-figure token bills before a single production agent shipped. They now want dashboards showing what's AI-generated, what it costs, and whether it beats adding headcount.
- Accepting real timelines: leadership once expected to go AI-native via workshops and tool subscriptions; now they call for help with realities like a seven-year-old codebase (post truncated).
Key signal: enterprise AI adoption is shifting from hype-driven spending to cost accountability and measurable impact.
