Anyworld: self-hosted multiplayer text RPG with a local LLM as Dungeon Master
northpoler · reddit · 2026-10-03
A developer open-sourced Anyworld, a browser-based multiplayer text RPG inspired by AI Dungeon 2 where an LLM (local via llama.cpp or cloud API) acts as the Dungeon Master:
- Zero setup for players: only the host runs the model; friends join via a browser link, mobile supported.
- True multiplayer resolution: all actions in a round are resolved together; uncertain outcomes use real Python RNG dice, with the model narrating only.
- Hidden DM mechanics: hosts can feed secret NPC motives and set hidden probability triggers that Python rolls and the model weaves into the story.
- Memory system: context is budgeted, old rounds compressed into world states/player facts/threads, with a second model pass auditing summaries.
Limitations: one game per server, no loadable saves, host needs Python and networking skills.
